I gasped and sat up, staring at him.

“Brandy?”

“Brandy.” He nodded. “And as soon as I smelled her, she also called to me as a mate.”

There was no way to stop staring at him. My mind was a fucking roller coaster at this point, and I didn’t know if it was ever going to end.

First, coyotes, then friends being shot, then wolves, then shifting wolves, then mates and now… more shifters. More mates. More…

What the hell was this? What was going on?

“Brandy is a lesbian. She doesn’t like guys, in the practical sense.”

“Yes, she told me.”

“You’ve talked to her?”

He didn’t answer me right away, which was my answer.

“You fucked her?” It was a scream and a whisper as I jumped off his lap. “You fucked her.”

“I didn’t… well, not in the traditional sense.”

“You defiled my lesbian best friend. Oh my God. Did you force her? Did you rape her?”

He vaulted off the couch and grabbed my arms before I could get out of the room. “No!” he yelled. “No. I would never. She told me she was a lesbian, and I’m not a monster. I would never, ever force a woman to do anything. Didn’t I prove that to you the first night we met?”

His big eyes were suddenly so sad, and I realized I had taken what he was telling me the wrong way. Of course this man wouldn’t hurt her. I knew that, in my gut. He’d been trying to say something to me and I missed it.

I backed up. “So, wait. You slept with her?”

“We need better words for sexual activities. I had a sexual interlude. I didn’t have actual intercourse. How could I? I didn’t know her, she’s a lesbian, and she was completely and utterly confused about what was going on. I couldn’t explain, either. I couldn’t even explain to myself.”

“How did this happen?”

Rick brought me back to the couch and settled me on his lap and boner again. He told me about heading up there to find me and finding her walking up to the porch. He knew then but didn’t make a move.

“That’s when Ulysses showed up.”

“Who?”

He took a deep breath. “Since you know I’ll tell you everything I know. Ulysses is the Alpha of the coyotes stalking Brandy’s land. They’re exiles from the Turner Lake pack and they’ve been haunting the property for decades. I don’t know the whole story of why or how, but they’ve coveted Brandy’s land all this time. And so he showed up at the door just as Jess and Garrett showed up.”

There was one place this story was going. “The ravens came down, didn’t they?”

“They did. They drove him back and off the land. Brandy reacted to the Alpha Effect, and I was there. I told her I would run it off, several times, but she wouldn’t hear it. I think she knew she couldn’t run it off.”

I laced my fingers with his. “I’m sorry I accused you of raping her. That wasn’t right. Hearing that she had sex with a guy threw me off balance.
